SENIORS OOM UNDER WAY

The Senior Order of Merit begins

The Senior County competitive season has now well and truly started with the first two Order of Merit events contested

A big field assembled at Royal North Devon for the North Devon Seniors for the Mervyn T Fudge Trophy and were met with incredibly demanding conditions. Brutal winds blew across the course on both days and from the most challenging of directions, at strength from the north-east and then east on successive days

Saunton’s David Holyoak produced a stunning day 1 73 as only one other player, Mike White from West Wilts with 79, produced a scratch score under 80. On day 2 they went out in the last group with defending champion Tim Aggett (Warren) after his 80 which tied with Simon Dymoke (N Wilts), Saunton’s Mark Snape, Warren’s Jeremy Binch and Neill Hickson from Ringway in Cheshire following on a shot further back.

White was imperious in that second round, shooting 73 in the incredibly testing conditions to finish 5 ahead of Aggett, 6 ahead of Binch after both shot 77s. Snape came through to 4th with 79 three ahead of 5th placed Dymoke, whilst Holyoak endured a really tough day to fall to 6th, losing out on countback to Dymoke after they tied on 163.

Tiverton’s Andy Pryce took the handicap honours with a 2-round total of 151, a single shot ahead of Tim Arnold and Andy Wilson

A week later a sizeable number of the same characters assembled at the Warren for the second event in the series, the club’s Over 50s Open. In what we hope is not a developing theme once again the players endured the worst possible wind for the golf course, a scything north-westerly blowing straight down the River Exe. Binch was in top form, however, a superb one-under 68 for 37 points to win the scratch, with Holyoak and Tiverton’s Tony Allsopp on 34 gross, Aggett and Snape on 3-over 33s.

The home club’s Damon Robbins took the handicap with 38 points, beating Allsopp on countback. Binch in third, Holyoak fourth and Honiton’s Andy Phillips in 5th with 35.

After the 2024 OOM ended up being decided between the two Warreners by the final putt on the final green of the OOM Finals the pair of them are at it again with just a couple of points between them at the top after two events
