U14 BOYS' COACHING

Last week saw the start of our first under 14s squad coaching held at Woodbury Park Golf & Country Club. We had 14 players attend and all were focused with a great attitude and willingness to improve.

The session was hosted by Steve White and Gary Milne. It was explained to boys how the focus from DevonGolf as a county is going to be stroke average going forward rather than handicap. We ran two experiments. The idea of both experiments was to prove to the boys how choosing the correct shots was a quick way to lower scores. The results were as follows and speak for themselves.

Experiment 1
Pitching the ball to a flag 20-yards away from 10-feet short of the green the boys had to throw the ball up with a sand iron and land it over a rope 15 feet short of the flag. Each boy had 1 shot and we measured in centimetres the collective distance from the flag. The result was 6,386cm.

We then asked the boys to play a low shot landing the ball on the green in the first 15-feet (no help or tuition was given at this point). The result was 6,162cm

We then proceeded to help and coach the boys with the result being 3,533cm!

Experiment 2
The boys started 2-feet from off the green to a flag 30-feet away. The boys could use their preferred choice of club and putters, wedges and a few 7 and 8 irons were chosen. The result was a combined total distance of 2,126cm and 4 players were within a 1-metre.

Taking them out of their comfort zone the boys played the same shot again, only this time they all had to use a 6 iron and now 7 players were within 1-metre of the flag and the combined distance was 1,905cm.

The results speak for themselves.

We also focused on bunkers where Archie Griffiths (Sidmouth) was outstanding and led the way.

It was a very successful session for the boys who were a pleasure to teach.
