THE WARREN CROCUS SALVERS 2024

Everyone's fingers were firmly crossed that play would happen at all. After dire weather the day before and thunder and lightening forecast for the afternoon, players came ready for the worst. Division 1 players were out a 9am playing for the Warren Crocus Silver Salver. An ancient competition from the Devon County Ladies' Golf Association days, the format is now a Greensomes Stableford. DevonGolf's Competitions Director Tim Aggett was the starter for the day and the good news was the rain held off - mostly!

Early scores were on the low side and it was near the middle of the field before Nicky Sandom & Julie Bowskill (PH 16 - Saunton) posted 38 points. Further down the field saw Penny Deakin & Frances Harbron (PH11 - Okehampton) post 39 points. It was an anxious wait for the final cards to come in and Lesley Harris & Julia Young (PH17 - Stover) scored 38 points to finish in 3rd place.

But no DevonGolf competition runs without the massive support from the Devon clubs and members. The Warren Golf Club was no exception with Sam Dunn and his team providing a superb course and everyone appreciated the always amazing clubhouse hospitality. Jon and Ben in the Pro's Shop ran the 2s competition and winners from Division 1 were Susan Broderick & Barbara Cavill (Warren), Sarah Lockwood & Ali Menheneott (Tiverton), Melanie Adcock & Trish Gledhill (Thurlestone) and Lesley Harris & Julia Young (Stover). The support from the members was immense. Frances Harbron was at the club super early and also marked a card for the final pairing in Division 2. Lesley ran the raffle and Mary Dummett marked a card for a Division 1 team. Also braving the elements as ball spotters were June Cassidy, Jill Fenwick, Claire Simpson and Thea Durbin.

The weather held off until the very end for the Bronze Salver players and those at the back of the start sheet experienced some torrential rain but only as they were on the last few holes. The first card in was a very respectable 37 points from Karen Cole & Kathleen Hill (PH27 - Dainton Park) but they were quickly demoted by Michele Marsland & Jasmin Herbert PH33 - Boringdon Park) with a score of 41 points. It was a particularly impressive game from Jasmin who was playing a course other than Boringdon for the very first time. Not far behind, though, were Kathryn Protheroe & Charlotte Gough (PH27 - Teignmouth) who brought home the winning score of 45 points.
