THE SHEELAH CREASY BOWL QUARTER FINALS 2024

Earlier this month we marked the beginning of the knockout stages of the women’s inter-club competitions with the Sheelah Creasy Bowl Quarter Finals at Okehampton Golf Club. There is a new format this year of 3 singles games followed by 2 Greensomes games in each match. At the beginning of play the weather felt very autumnal - drizzly, blustery and cold - but the summer weather gradually returned.

Teignmouth
Bovey Tracey

The first match was Bigbury versus Bovey Tracey.  Bovey proved the stronger team on this occasion with singles wins for Sarah Watson and Ness O’Brien, followed by a Greensomes win for Sue Adams and Jenny Pennell to take the match win. The second match was between Teignmouth and Ilfracombe and Teignmouth’s pink army of supporters were out in full force. This was a more even match with singles wins for Linda Barrington of Ilfracombe and Lorraine Dunn and Kathryn Protheroe of Teignmouth, Kathryn securing her win on the 19th hole. Evelyn Jones and Jill Bastock of Ilfracombe won their Greensomes, which meant two games apiece and it was all on the last Greensomes game to decide the match – and this was won by Surya Patterson and Ros Hearn of Teignmouth.

Dainton Park
Saunton

The third quarter final was between Dainton Park and Staddon Heights. Marlene Carder of Staddon won her singles game but Dainton’s Karen Cole and Susan Elson won the other two singles with Ayumi Coulton and Vicky Mayling winning their Greensomes for Dainton to take the match. The final match was between East Devon and Saunton. Deirdre Mackness of East Devon took the first singles win for East Devon but this was followed by singles wins for Liz Fielder and Louise Brown of Saunton. Carolyn John and Vikki Bowes won their Greensomes for East Devon but the third game win needed for Saunton was won by Greensomes pair Ann Wallace and Sue Hart on the 19th hole. The winners will face each other in the semi finals on 6th September at Downes Crediton Golf Club. Bovey Tracey will play Saunton and Dainton Park will play Teignmouth.

My thanks to our host club Okehampton, and especially to Lady Captain Sue Williams who was a huge help with planning and who organised a great team of ball spotters to make the day go smoothly. Thanks to the office, the greens staff, and to the bar and kitchen staff who looked after everyone so well and provided some excellent match meals. My thanks to the referees Terry Hembrow, Nigel Roy and Jane Macdonald-Smith and many thanks also go to Wendy Stanbury who did sterling work as the starter, getting all the teams underway on time and with words of encouragement.

Congratulations to all who took part and played some great golf in a very friendly atmosphere as always. It was lovely to see familiar faces again, together with some ladies new to our inter-club knock-out stages.
