MAGIC MONDAY FOR DEVON IN SOUTH WEST INTER-COUNTIES - DAY 1

Perranporth Golf Club are hosting the Women's South West Inter-Counties 2024 - the annual fixture between Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire. Each team plays each other over 3 days, Each match consists of 2 Foursomes games and 3 Singles games, which means 36 holes over several days for some players from the team of 10.

Perranporth is a tough track and the weather makes a huge difference to club selection from morning to afternoon. The wind can be strong, making an already hilly and often blind holes course even harder work for players and caddies. But the glorious views across Perranporth beach adds to this fantastic golf course.

Led by Team Manager Vicky Holloway and Second Team Manager Lorna Elliott, the DevonGolf team players are Amanda Burchell (Bigbury), Susie Carr (Teignmouth), Chloe Hall (Warren), Lauren McGinnis (Churston), Emily Morey (East Devon), Carys Morris (Portmore), Sophie Page (East Devon), Hannah Reynolds (Teignmouth), Gudrun Thorsteinsdottir (East Devon) and Abby Turner (Okehampton). Caddies over the 3 days are Ben, Kate, Rosie, Sally & Stuart, Paul (DevonGolf Operations Manager), Laura, Frances, Mark, Wendy, Hannah (DevonGolf Girls' Team Manager) and DevonGolf President Pam - quite the little following! But that's without including the amazing parents Donna & Steve Morris and Andy & Susie Carr who act as gophers and, more importantly, cook breakfast in their cottage for the entire tribe! All this is done on a volunteer basis and the camaraderie and fun is second to none.

But to the golf. The first match for Devon was against Gloucestershire. Lauren & Carys played Jo Hodge & Megan Bartlett and were 1-up after 9 holes, winning the game 4-2.  Sophie & Emily played Molly Stewart & Claudia Ovens and were in the lead from hole 3 to finish the front 9 2-up. The back 9 became bit of a battle as Molly & Claudia chipped away, playing some stunning golf taking it to all-square on hole 15. Neither side gave an inch on 16 & 17 and Emily Morey's fantastic long putt on the 18th clinched it for Devon. The Foursomes games gave Devon 2 points in the bag.

In the Singles games Gloucestershire's Alex Saunders played Gudrun who was 2-up at the turn. Then she turned up the heat and finished the match 4-3 for another Devon point. Gloucestershire's Mariella Buchan played Chloe, leaving Chloe 1-down after 9. Keeping the pressure on the back 9 Mariella won 3-2 giving Gloucestershire their first point of the day.

The final match of the morning was between Gloucestershire's Elin Tynan and Devon's youngest team member Susie Carr. Nerves weren't an issue for Susie who was 3-up after 9 and held out to win 1-up and another point for Devon.

It was a great morning's score for Devon - 4 points and Gloucestershire 1 point.

Sophie & Caddy Hannah

The wind decided to take an even bigger hand in the afternoon and made the going even more tough as Devon played Wiltshire. Abby & Hannah played Lauren Huston & Claire Smith and Wiltshire took the first point of the afternoon winning 2-1. Amanda and Chloe were the next Foursomes pairing and brought home a point with a 3-1 win. It was a clean sweep in the Singles with a stunning 7-6 win from Sophie against Melissa Schroeder. Lauren McGinnis played Alex Sadler and won 3-2. Gudrun had to keep at it to get her 3-1 win but she put another point on the Devon board for the final score to be Devon 4 points and Wiltshire 1 point.

The first day's leader board is:
