Daniel Rosevear of Thurlestone Golf Club is the DevonGolf Men's County Champion 2024. Here's how he got to win the most coveted trophy.
64 top county players had entered the Championship and played 36 holes on Friday for the Gold Medal, with the top 16 qualifying for the matchplay places on Saturday and Sunday, Finals Day. Teignmouth Golf Club were the hosts and the course could not have been in finer condition with the speed of the greens requiring great skill on which to land and putt. All 16 play round 1 of the Championship matchplay which then leaves the 8 that progress moving into the quarter finals and the 8 eliminated in round 1 moving into the Wish Slater Salver matchplay rounds.
Dan Rosevear won the Gold Medal over the Friday's 36 holes (for Gold Medal results click here) by an incredible 7 shots after posting a 3 under par 66 in round 2..
The Men's Gold Medal Team winners were Sean Mason, Todd Radford and Tom Papworth whose combined 23 over par over the 36 holes brought home the trophy for Teignmouth Golf Club. The team now go on to the National Team Championships representing both club and county.
The men's matchplay stages were hard fought over the next 2 days. Tom Woodhouse (East Devon) and Jay Scott (Tiverton) had an epic battle with Jay making it through to the final 2&1. It took Dan until the 21st hole to beat Jack Whiteway (Okehampton) to win his place in the final. With a delayed start to their final due to the extra holes semi-final holes played by Dan, Jay and Dan set off for the final 18 holes. Dan took an early lead over the first 6 holes moving 2 up but was soon pegged back by a resillient Scott which say the match all square at the turn. Dan playing the 15th hole 1 up looked like he was moving back to all square after hitting his second shot left and having to reload was able to escape by making an up and down and watching Scott lip out from 5 feet. The drama on the 16th continued with Dan clubbing up to account for a stiff breeze which seemingly made no impact on his pure strike landing over the back of the green. Scott hit a solid shot into 12 feet and seemingly well in the driving seat to take the hole had to witness a high level skill shot from Dan who hit a flop shot to 3 feet making par and Scott watch yet another heavy lip out for two to remain 1 down. A par on the 17th hole for Dan was enough to clinch the title 2&1 and be crowned DevonGolf Amateur Champion 2024.
The matchplay games for the Wish Slater Salver finished with Rory Hunt (Teignmouth) playing Sam Dunn (Warren). Two players who know each other's games well and two players who determinedly and doggedly refused to allow a lead to build. It took Sam until the 18th to win 1 up.
Congratulations, Sam, winner of the Wish Slater Salver and runner up Rory Hunt (Teignmouth).
Huge thanks from DevonGolf and all who played over the 3 days to Teignmouth Golf Club members who gave up their course over the best 3 consecutive days weather-wise since last summer. The staff at the club, Gina and Jodie in the kitchen with their 5.30am starts ready for breakfasts for the players and their staff, the greens staff who always have stupid o'clock early starts and gave us a wonderful course worthy of a championship competition, Lorna Elliott the Club Services manager and everyone involved in making the event happen. Volunteers from DevonGolf who gave up many hours of their time to referee, David Smith and Peter Holt for the 3 days and Lesley Pascoe on Finals day deserve much praise. President Pam St Leger and Wendy Stanbury were on hand throughout to assist Paul Cloke, DevonGolf's Operations Manager, who is the real brains behind such superb organisation.
