SENIORS' CHANNEL LEAGUE v GWENT

After the disappointment of losing to a still undefeated Dorset, the DevonGolf Seniors' team needed to bounce back strongly against Gwent. The Welsh county has not been having a great season, making a visit to play them at The Monmouthshire Golf Club in Abergavenny feel even more like a potential banana skin. With Binch unavailable and Papworth injury-plagued, there were two changes from the side which played Dorset. Churston's Rick Osborne coming back in and a debut for newly minted County Senior Champion Simon Bawden from Thurlestone Golf Club.

After disappointing morning sessions in the previous two games, Team Manager Aggett shook up the order and to good effect. First he and Warren club mate Chris Audin saw off the home club duo of Phil Edwards and Mike Bloor on the final hole. Mark Evans (RND) and Dave Eva (Thurlestone) continued their love of Greensomes with a dominant 4-3 win over Terry O'Donnell (St Mellons) and Mike Brimble (Newport).

Gareth Jones (Celtic Manor) and Geoff Court from Newport struck back for Gwent, beating Osborne and Stover's Andy Rich by 1 hole, whilst Bawden and Simon Waddington (RND) couldn't quite convert an opportunity on the final green, settling for a half with the Newport duo of Julian Knight and Michael Coombes. Tony Allsopp (Tiverton) and Tim Jones (Warren) took the last match from the St Mellons pairing of Mike Britton and Darran Miller. Devon were up 3½ to 1½ at lunchtime.

The Welsh put out their two home club guys in the top two singles, Edwards inflicting a first single loss of the season on Aggett up the last and Bloor halving with Evans. From there Devon took control, Audin defeating O'Donnell 6-5, then Osborne, Waddington and Rich all wining 3-2, over Brimble, Jones, and Court respectively.

Knight got one back for Gwent, defeating Bawden 3-2, but Devon's Jones beat Coombes 2-1 and Allsopp closed out Britton on the 16th, a long par 3. Gwent had one final shot as Millar also won at the 16th over Eva.

It was another dominant singles display from the DevonGolf Seniors, taking the afternoon session by 6½ to 3½ to win 10-5 overall and maintain their challenge to defend their Seniors' Channel League title.

Next up, a crucial home match with undefeated Glamorgan at East Devon Golf Club.

DevonGolf thanks go to The Monmouthshire Golf Club for hosting the match.
