The Devon Salver & Brockman Trophy competitions were held at Tavistock Golf Club on a beautiful day. The moors looked inviting and the players were keen to get the 36 holes started. Entry to this competition is restricted to a handicap index limit of 9.4 and some of Devon's finest golfers were entered. The Devon Salver is a 36-hole stroke-play competition played off scratch and The Brockman Trophy is for the best gross score for the U22 players over the 36 holes.
First out were Tom Woodhouse (East Devon), Sam Dunn (Warren) and David Turnbull (Tavistock). Sam returned a card of 64 on the par 71 course, setting the pace for the rest of the field. But not to be outdone was East Devon's James Pickard (+2) who shot a 63. Nearest to them after the first round was Matt Handley (Stover) with a 68 and Torquay's Scott Pym and Charlie Ashbee (Yelverton) who both shot 69s. That score also put Charlie in the lead for the U22 Brockman Trophy. After a ham, egg and chips pit stop the players went out for their second round, full of praise for the magnificent Tavistock course.
Sam Dunn couldn't quite maintain his stunning form of the morning, turning in a very respectable par 71 putting him 7 under for the day. All eyes were now on James Pickard to see if he could match his morning round and he didn't disappoint with a fantastic second round score of 65, 14 under for the day. Stewart Ewens of Dartmouth improved his morning score of 75 by 5 shots, returning the second best score of round 2 with a gross 70. Alas, it was not enough to put him in the prizes.
The winner of the Devon Salver was East Devon's James Pickard whose handicap of +2 has now reached the dizzy heights of +3.9. Congratulations, James, on a fabulous day's golf.
